Kristin absolutely loves sharing somatics classes! Each week she hosts live classes in her Portland, Oregon studio and online. Her students enjoy classes so much, they requested the classes be recorded so they can listen to them again and again. And you can too with the virtual classroom! Your membership gives you access to:
audio recordings of somatics classes (each about an hour long)
brief classes (10, 15, 30 minutes long)
library of somatic movements in video format
recordings of tips to get the most out of your practice
I'M a Newbie. Should I jump right in, or should I have a private lesson first?
If you have particular health issues, questions or concerns, or just want personalized plan to set you off on the right foot, an initial session with Kristin is a great idea! Kristin will meet with you online via Zoom (which is like Skype), or, if you are in the Portland OR area, at her studio. Plus, you'll receive a video recording of your online lesson.
How long are the classes?
Most classes are about an hour long. There are shorter ones, 10, 15, and 30 minutes long, sprinkled in too.
How do I access the classes?
You'll need a good internet connection.
Recordings stream on most devices; desktop, laptop, phone, or tablet.
Log into the members only section of the website whenever you want to take a class.
Do I need any special equipment for classes?
Ultimately the only things you need for somatics is your brain, body, and quiet time. That said, most classes are done lying on the floor, so you might want a mat, blanket or rug. You might want a pillow for some of the side-lying movements.
Some classes are done standing and seated. If we do a seated class, a chair or stool with a flat seat and no arms are best. Avoid leaning back on the seat back too.
Kristin might throw in some fun, optional explorations using things you might have around the house. Optional is the key word. :-)
Can I do Somatics on my bed?
Beds can be very soft and squishy, which makes it easier to over do the movements. If you must do the class from a bed, please do the moves very gently, slowly and avoid making large, exaggerated motions. Over time you should find you can get to the floor. Kristin has clients well into their 80s who can, you can too!
If the classes are audio only, what if I'm confused by a movement in a class?
While fitness classes are fast paced and you want to watch the instructor, Kristin guides the somatics lessons slowly and with detailed descriptions. In the live classes students have eyes closed as they listen to verbal cues.
For some lessons in the virtual classroom, Kristin may include a short video or photo of a particular move that might require visual guidance.
If you are confused, ask a question in the comments section below the specific class recording. Kristin will answer questions there as well. By asking questions in the virtual classroom, everyone can benefit. :-)
The classes are labeled with the date recorded and focus of the class. There is a list of categories. You can also search for key words like "arch and flatten" or "carpal tunnel".

Is somatics suitable for me?
Somatics can help everyone! From those in pain to athletes wanting to enhance their game, and people of any gender, any age.
Somatics classes are not exercise classes. They are classes to enhance your brain's sensory-motor awareness of yourself via gentle, slow movement.
Information found on the Think Somatics website and within the Virtual Classroom are not meant to replace or negate medical advice. Talk with your health care providers about somatics. (If needed, download an informational brochure at the bottom of this page. We encourage you to make your own health care decisions based upon your own research and in partnership with your health professionals.
What Else Should I know?
The classes are recorded live! As in studio-style classes—with somatic movement guidance, along with student questions, some somatic philosophy thrown in, some personal corrections for in-studio students. It's just like you were in class! If you prefer more "produced" lessons, check out Kristin's downloadable lessons.
I'm still on the fence. Can I try a class first?
If you want to experience an audio lesson before you enroll, consider purchasing downloadable lesson from the Think Somatics Store first. Check out the reviews too! This Ribs to Wrist class is part of the classroom library, as is this really awesome Neck, Jaw, Face and Shoulders lesson. Any of the audio lessons will give you a taste of what the classroom offerings are like.
