Nordic Walking Lessons
WHERE: Waynesville, NC
WHEN: TBA
Take Walking to a Whole New Level
Studies show that caloric burn while Nordic Walking is higher, while stress on the joints is lower than regular walking.
It also improves coordination, balance and muscle tone throughout the body while taking pressure off hips, knees and feet. You'll learn how to use the poles effectively plus how to blend fitness, mobility and flexibility exercises into your Nordic walking routine.
Choosing Nordic Poles
Nordic poles are not the same as trekking or hiking poles. If you have trekking poles you could start the class with them, but the technique is different. If you enjoy Nordic walking you can choose to upgrade to nordic poles.
Kristin is not affiliated with any nordic pole manufacturer. She uses Exel Poles.
This site is a good source for quality nordic poles. Best to order one-piece poles, not the collapsible ones! The collapsible ones are flimsy, hard to evenly align with each other and vibrate more which can stress your arms, shoulders, wrists and hands. Trust me, one-piece poles will be your best friends!
To get on the waitlist, please email us and include class title and days/times that work best for you.

Crochet Rag Rug + Gliding Workout Series
WHERE: Think Somatics Studio, located inside Folkmoot Center 112 Virginia Ave, Waynesville, NC
WHEN: TBA
WHEN: TBA
What You’ll Learn
- In this class you will first learn how to crochet a rag rug. You will make two small rag rug samplers.
- Next you’ll will learn how to use your samplers as gliding discs for full body workouts.
- Gliding is a great low-impact form of exercise that engages your core, lower and upper body, develops long, lean muscles, improves balance and coordination. Super fun too!
What to Bring to Class
- We will have tons of fabric on hand to make our samplers! You are welcome to also bring remnants of quilting cotton, discarded 100% cotton bed sheets, cotton clothing, or similar fabrics. Synthetics don’t work well for rugs. Neither do small fabric scraps.
- Please bring a pair of scissors or fabric shears.
- The bigger the hook the thicker the rug. We actually don’t want our rug samplers/gliders to be too thick, so a K or L size/ 7 or 8 mm hook should work. If you want to make a thick rug choose a jumbo hook, size Q/15mm. You can find packs of different sized hooks, if you can’t decide. :-)
- Once you’ve learned to crochet your rug samplers you can make a larger rug in fabrics of your choice. This will be discussed at class.
- For the workout portion of class, dress to move, wear workout shoes, and bring a water bottle.
Why you should Join us!
- Creativity and moving your body is good for your brain and body.
- Gliding discs provide an impact-free workout.
- You’ll move in multiple planes of movement (directions) that improve coordination, balance, range of motion.
- You’ll learn to strengthen your abs, back, legs, arms and chest.
- It’s a great cardiovascular workout that is gentle on the joints.
- You can easily do this kind of workout at home or on the road!
- Affordable and easy to store!

What is Somatics?
Somatic Movement Education (developed by Thomas Hanna PhD) is an effective method to reverse pain because it gets the root of all movement; your brain!
Every movement pattern you perform — from standing up and writing your name, to playing golf or the guitar — once learned, become engrained in your body. They become part of your habitual, "autopilot" patterns. Other patterns can also become engrained. Things like repetitive motions, stress responses, injuries, surgeries, all of which can lead to chronically contracted, stiff muscles called Sensory Motor Amnesia(SMA). That’s when your brain no longer has true control of how you move and sense your body.
Somatic Movement incorporates simple, safe movement technique called pandiculating.
Pandiculations retrain your whole body to function more freely and pain-free.
Beyond the pain relief, Somatics can improve sleep, decrease stress and improve mobility.
So you can get back to living the life you love!Somatic movement classes provide a gentle, safe way to release muscle tension and pain plus lower stress and anxiety.
Most classes are done lying on the floor, but many moves can be done while seated in a chair or standing.

About Nordic Poles
* NORDIC WALKING POLES are not the same as trekking or hiking poles. If you currently have other types of poles, you can bring them to class, and learn how Nordic poles differ. The experience will be different, but it will be educational just the same. If you want to start off with Nordic poles, you can purchase proper nordic poles from Skiwalking.com. You can use code kj28786 and save $10 of any 1-piece poles over $100. There are good quality poles under $100 as well.
Wherever you order your poles, be sure to order one-piece poles, not the collapsible ones! The collapsible poles can be flimsy, hard to evenly align with each other and vibrate more which can stress your arms, shoulders, wrists and hands. Trust me, one-piece poles will be your best friends!

Why You Should Explore Nordic Walking!
If you are a regular walker, Nordic poles can take your routine to a whole new level. If you’re less active, nordic poles can help reduce pain and assist with balance issues, that may otherwise hinder regular exercise. Nordic walking is even beneficial for those with Parkinson’s or MS because it can improve posture and help walkers maintain a quicker gait and longer stride.
While regular walking predominately works the leg muscles, Nordic walking also targets muscles of the back, core, shoulders, arms, and gluteals. Various studies estimate that Nordic walking can burn anywhere from 18% to 67% more calories than traditional walking.
Using Nordic poles distributes your body weight over four points on the ground, reducing wear and tear on the feet, ankles, knees and hips. Nordic walking simultaneously engages the lower and upper body, improving coordination and therefore cognitive health. While Nordic walking is great for people of all ages, the benefits can especially help older adults stay active, and independent lifestyle.
Nordic poles are very different from hiking/trekking poles. They have a glove-like strap you slide your hand into, as compared to the loose straps found on most trekking/hiking poles. The specialized straps help you transmit power to push off the ground, which propels you forward. Three criteria for proper Nordic Walking are correct pole length, correct fit of the strap gloves, and not swinging the poles out in front of you as you walk.
When choosing your poles, opt for 1-piece models vs collapsible ones. Most poles offered on Amazon and other big chain retailers are not true Nordic poles, even if labeled as such. Surprisingly, well-stocked sporting good stores generally only carry hiking/trekking poles either. A Nordic walking instructor or a national Nordic walking organization to help select your poles. A qualified instructor can help you learn to use them correctly.
A good pair of Nordic poles is a great investment for anyone seeking an easy-to-incorporate-into-your-life activity. No gym membership, bulky equipment, or storage space required! If you’re ready to try something new, give Nordic walking a try. Your brain and body will thank you!
