Kristin is back with her hugely popular workout course, Take It Outside! Fitness. She offered outdoor fitness training in Oregon for nearly 20 years, and now is providing great, fun workouts in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Her past students will tell you the workouts are like no other. You'll leave feeling invigorated and inspired! This is a 4-week course that meets 2x a week.

Hi there! I'm Kristin Jackson. Wanna know a secret? I really don’t dig going to the gym. At all. Don’t get me wrong, I love to workout. I know the benefits of exercise. I’ve been a personal trainer for nearly 30 years, so I’m well aware. I also know it’s more important than ever once we hit perimenopause and beyond to keep at it!

I just prefer to workout at home if I’m in a hurry, or the intimate setting of my Think Somatics studio, and most of all, outdoors in nature! I love to do that with friends and clients, so we connect in real time, away from machines and devices.   

Ever since I earned my personal training certification I’ve been taking my clients outside, so they get a great workout, and reap the benefits of of the great outdoors. Things a gym can’t replicate! And the added benefits — reduced stress, lower cortisol levels, improved mood— are things women in midlife and beyond really need! My clients are always amazed how many ways we can use the outdoors as our gym. You’ll never look at park benches, bleachers, trees, hills, and fences the same way again. Some times we each bring weights, or bands, or I may even hula hoops in a session or two. The variety is endless. The fun in contagious! 

Teaching my one-of-a-kind outdoor fitness classes began way back in 2003. I subbed a step aerobics class at a rec center, but offered a circuit class instead (because I’m no cardio-dancing queen!)  After class a bunch of the women came up to me, asking “OMG, this class is just what I’ve been looking for! Where can I do this again with you?!” And Take It Outside! Fitness was born! 

Lastly, I am NOT a drill drill sergeant! I believe in challenging ourselves, which also means listening to our bodies. I want you to say "OH!" as you discover just how strong you can be. Not "OWW!" in pain. I don't subscribe to the "all pain, no gain" mentality. Life is crazy and hard enough as it is. Let's make friends with our bodies and nervous systems.

Kristin is just one of the few combination certified Personal Trainers AND Somatic Educators in the world, so her workouts are like no other!
​Classes will take advantage of the surroundings as our gym. Workouts will be a combination of activities using our bodies, hand weights, bands and the structures around us, including bleachers, benches, hills, etc. The intensity will be tailored to the group, with plenty of variations so everyone gets a good/appropriate workout. Intensity levels will rise and fall, which is one of the best ways for women in mid to late life to exercise! Kristin isn't a drill sergeant, but she is very dedicated to help folks perform exercises correctly and safely for the best workout possible! the results mean you'll:

You could hobble together a routine from influencers and YouTube, but you could be getting ahead of yourself. The trending exercise routines for menopause transition are too much too soon for most women. Folks are setting themselves up for injuries, exhaustion (which actually raises cortisol levels) and falling further behind. We are all busy! Many of us are in the sandwich generation, caring for kids, maybe grand kids, and taking care of aging parents. Whoa! It's a lot. And women are famous for putting everyone and everything at the top of our to-do lists, with little left for ourselves. That's why this course was created! To encourage you to carve out 2 hours a week just for you, your body, brain and bones. Because if we aren't healthy, everything on our to-do lists gets harder to do.  Possible sides effects of this course include:

Is this course for me?
This class is for you if love being outdoors, being a part of a group, being supportive of each other, and welcoming of all. There is a focus on health and exercise protocols for women in mid to later life, but all genders are welcome. 

This course is not a good fit for those who need climate controlled surroundings. Those who aren’t able to walk/stand for the hour long class. Aren’t able to get down and up from the ground and seated positions (benches or bleachers). Feel free to sign up for private sessions with Kristin if you feel you are unable to do this course at this time!
What about the weather?
Unless there is lightening or flooding conditions, classes will be held rain or shine. Dress accordingly.
What do I need for the class?
  • Bring a bottle of water.
  • Use a small backpack of sling for your personal items. Don’t bring a purse or valuables. (We will be moving around the area, so you can’t leave them on the ground for the class period)
  • Wear proper shoes! No flip flops, sandals, etc. Wear shoes with tread on them for traction. We will be on gravel paths, pavement and grass. 
  • Dress for a workout and the weather. Hats, sunscreen, cool/wicking fabrics, etc.
  • If you have a pair of hand weights (2-5 lbs) bring them along for the first class. 
  • You should aim for a protein + carb snack after class. Bring it with you or be sure to eat it within 30 minutes of class. 
What if I can’t attend all the classes?
In an ideal world, you would be able to attend all the classes in the 4 weeks. But if you miss one or two, that’s ok! You’re learning how to use the outdoors as your gym, so feel free to do a workout on your own while you are away.

Can I get a refund of Pay for just part of the classes?
There are no make up sessions*, partial payments or refunds for this course. 

* If a session is canceled due to weather (based on Think Somatics determination) the class will be made up at the end of the course, as determined by Think Somatics.
